AFRICA : PARENTS TOLD TO BALANCE WORK AND FAMILY

Parents-Urged-to-Follow-their-Children’s-Education
NAIROBI, August 3, 2012 (CISA) -Parents have been urged to balance work and family if the ideals of Christian education are to be realized.
Ms Augusta Muthigani, National Executive Secretary Commission for Education and Religious Education at the Kenya Episcopal Conference was addressing a conference on Pope Paul VI and the Church in Africa.
“Families must help children and young people gain knowledge, values , attitudes and skills they need to become adults who can not only take care of themselves, others but also promote the dignity of the human person,” she said.
The conference that was held at Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA), Nairobi Kenya brought together several Cardinals, monsignors, bishops, priests, men and women religious and lay from different parts of Africa.
Ms Muthigani stressed the importance of collaboration between the family and school in the growth and development of children saying it will to a great extent “determine their formation in character and performance in academic.”
She however noted that the Church needs to support the parents and guardians by providing institutions that create a supportive, safe and nurturing environment for children to grow in.
She also urged parents to embrace social media noting that technology is evolving fast and children are communicating through tweeting, face booking and texting. There is need for teachers and parents to be exposed to the use of the social media in order to be able to relate to the young people at the same level and monitor them.
“Is it not time to evangelize to the African child and youth through the social media?” she posed
She said the use of social media in catechetical instructions would enlighten and strengthen faith in the youth using activities that interest and engage them fully.
She noted that in order to achieve Christian education as spelt out by Pope Paul VI in the declaration on family and Christian education, there would be need for the wholesome development of the child through cultures that promotes family unit which is the first school of social values.
